Friday Fun Fact

I really need to change this weekly post to "Fun Superstition" instead of "Fun Fact" because I'm about to share another tidbit that has been steeped in folklore....

Have you ever wondered why so many wedding ceremonies start on the half hour? Some folks believe that starting your married life on the half hour means your marriage will always be "on the way up". This is in reference to the minute hand on a clock face heading in an upwards direction.

Adversely, when couples get married on the hour, the minute hand of the clock has no where to go but down which could possibly signify trouble for the new couple. I haven't found anything to support the significance of the hour hand in these scenarios, but using this logic, 6:30pm would likely be the luckiest time to get married!

Using everyday logic, getting married on the half hour provides a closer time to arrive at the wedding reception. Some couples are foregoing the tradition of not letting the groom see the bride before the wedding and taking pre-ceremony pictures to maximize time. Many couples today are choosing to marry in simple ceremonies, outside of the church or other traditional venues.

I like to joke that my wedding to the Mr. was the shortest in history (literally less than 5 minutes) causing me to exclaim "That's it?" when our officiant proclaimed us husband and wife. (That got a few chuckles from our guests!) Needless to say, our wedding started at 5:30pm and our reception started roughly around 5:35pm.
Happy Friday everyone!
